We’re here to report on the results of driver Ukyo Sasahara’s performance in Round 4 of the Formula Renault, held at Italy’s Autodromo Nazionale Monza on July 6-7.
During Saturday’s qualifying, the cars were divided into 2 groups; Ukyo was placed in Group B with 14 other cars. In order to preserve tires for the 2 final rounds, he sat in standby on pit road for the first 15 of the 30 min qualifying, gambling everything on his performance in the final 15. At the very end of the session ill fortune brought him a red flag, but he still finished in 10th, putting him in Role 10 among the 30 cars on the staring grid.
During Race 1 of the finals on July 6, Ukyo passed 2-3 cars in the first corner, but then got tangled in a minor collision when a car spun out in front of him, damaging his front wing. Ukyo hurried back to the pit for repairs, but lost many places in the process. Despite this, he pushed himself all the way to the end, rolling into 15th place at the checkered flag.
On Sunday, July 7 for Race 2 of the finals, Ukyo started in Role 15. At the very start of the race many leading cars were tangled in an accident, and by the final stretches, Ukyo had worked his way up to 5th – a personal best! But just at that moment, in the final corner, he was run off the road due to an opponent’s dangerous passing maneuver. Though he didn’t retire, he’d fallen all the way to 18th place. But after that, once the race had finished, a few higher ranking drivers were issued penalties, and in the end Ukyo was bumped up to 15th place.
Though both races were characterized by unfortunate accidents, he definitely wants to make up for it in the next race!
Round 5 will be held on July 27-28 at Italy’s Autodromo Nazionale Monza.
We’ll of course be bringing you a full report, so be sure to stay tuned!
